KOCHI: The footage captured by Shymol NJ, who was slapped by the CI, and her husband Benjo, included the police's trickery to save the son of a retired SI. This is what made the couple a target of the Ernakulam North police. The retired SI used to work in Kochi city. The son of the retired SI had booked a room at a lodge near Benjo's tourist home on North Railway Station Road on June 18, 2024. Drug use is common in lodges in this area. There are indications that a woman was also with the son of the retired SI.

It is reported that the lodge staff had an argument with the man. The North Police arrived at around 1 am after the man called them to inform them that two staff had stolen his mobile phone and scooter keys. SI Santosh Kumar and CPO Jayaraj, who were on patrol duty, assaulted the lodge staff and tried to force them into a police vehicle. Hearing their screams, Shymol and Benjo came running and recorded the police assault on their mobile phones. With this, the police left the staff and approached the couple. In the footage, the SI's son is also seen approaching Benjo. In the meantime, the staff left the place. The police left after threatening that Benjo had helped the accused escape and that action would be taken against them. A case was registered against Benjo that same day. It was on the 20th that the police entered the tourist home and took Benjo into custody, and then his wife Shymol was assaulted at the station.

Mystery of the events at the lodge

The events that took place at the lodge where the retired SI's son stayed on the night of the incident have not been revealed. The woman who was in the room disappeared when the police arrived. Benjo asked for the CCTV footage of the lodge, but the owner did not provide it out of fear of the police. There is a camera from another hotel at the place where the employees are being dragged into the jeep. The lodge in charge also refused to provide their footage due to police pressure. Benjo said that he would submit the footage he captured to the court.
